A special meeting of the Council for the City of Crystal Falls was held in the Council Chamber of the City Hall on Monday, March 29, 2004 at 4:30 p. m. Central Time.

Present: Councilors Hendrickson, Thrasher, Benda and Koszyk.

Absent: Mayor Sabo

Also present were City Manager Nordeman, City Attorney Lawrence, City Clerk/Treasurer Olson, Bill Leonoff, and Jim Weeks.

The purpose of this special meeting was to hear a presentation on the advantages of membership in the Michigan Municipal Electric Association (MMEA).

Mayor Pro-Tem led all present in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Jim Weeks, MMEA Legislative Liaison and General Counsel presented the Councilors with some materials outlining the services of the MMEA including: mutual aid in times of need, legal consultation, monitoring of the Michigan Public Service Commission, and lobbying at the State and Federal levels. He noted that past efforts of the MMEA have caused the relaxation of requirements imposed for re-licensing of hydroelectric plants. Mr. Weeks presented the Council with their options regarding the securing of a customer service area for the future and promised assistance in making the decisions on how to accomplish this should the City decide to join the MMEA. The various public acts that govern municipal utilities were also discussed.

Manager Nordeman advised that the cost to become a member of the MMEA is based on annual KWHR sales. He noted that the current cost to the City of Crystal Falls would be $2541.00/year.

Councilor Koszyk voiced that he thought the membership would be "money well spent".

No action was taken on this issue at this meeting.

Councilor Benda seconded by Councilor Thrasher moved to adjourn this special meeting of the Council at 6:04 p.m.

Motion carried.
