A special meeting of the Council for the City of Crystal Falls was held in the Council Chamber of the City Hall on Tuesday, October 10, 2006 at 5:00 p.m. Central Time.

Present: Mayor Hendrickson, Councilors Heikkinen, Stachowicz, Valesano, and Thrasher

Absent: None

Also present were City Manager Nordeman, City Attorney Lawrence, and City Clerk/Treasurer Olson.

Visitors in attendance included: Mark Simeoni, Kelly Stankewicz, Tom Stachowicz, David Graff, Larry Bicigo, and Gerard Valesano.

The purpose of this special meeting was to consider the following items:

MML wage and compensation study review.

Public Works – hiring of an equipment operator.

Mayor Hendrickson led the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance.

The meeting began with a phone call to Heather Van Poucker, Manager of Consulting Services at the Michigan Municipal League and author of the update of the classification and compensation system report. Ms. Van Poucker reviewed each page of the report and explained how the data was compiled. The Councilors asked questions on several aspects of the report and Ms. Van Poucker provided clarification. The phone call was terminated at 5:50 p.m.

A discussion with the employees present ensued.

Councilor Heikkinen seconded by Councilor Valesano moved to direct Manager Nordeman to review the classification and compensation study and bring forth a recommendation for the implementation of the study to the Council for further discussion at a workshop to be held at a future date.

Ayes: Mayor Hendrickson, Councilors Heikkinen, Thrasher, and Valesano. Nays: Councilor Stachowicz.

Motion carried.

The proposed workshop was tentatively set for Tuesday, October 24, 2006.

Mayor Hendrickson called for a recess of the meeting at 7:00 p.m.

Meeting reconvened at 7:15 p.m.

Manager Nordeman explained the process followed for the interviews of the prospective equipment operator applicants. He stated that Public Works Foreman, Kelly Stankewicz, did the technical testing, followed by an additional interview conducted by Nordeman.

Councilor Valesano seconded by Councilor Stachowicz, moved to authorize Manager Nordeman to hire John Lortie as an equipment operator in the Public Works Department starting at Step #1 on the pay scale. Mr. Lortie’s hiring is subject to the results of a physical check-up and background check.

Motion carried.

Councilor Heikkinen seconded by Councilor Thrasher moved to adjourn this meeting of the City Council.

Motion carried.
