This letter, designed to acquaint you with some of the services offered by the Township, should answer many of your questions and, we hope, make living here easier and more enjoyable.Township Hall: The Township Hall is located at 1384 West U.S. 2 near the junction of Highways 2 and 141. Office hours are 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Telephone number is 906-875-3062. The Township offers the following services to its residents:Garbage Pickup occurs once a week. Call the Department of Public Works at 906-875-3290 Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. for pickup day in your area. All garbage must be contained in special Township bags, available at the Township office, Jubilee Foods in Crystal Falls, and Angeli’s Market in Iron River. There is a minimal fee for these bags.Land Division Permits may be obtained at the Township Hall where they are available from a folder on the bulletin board. The permits are processed by the Township Assessor who can be reached by calling the Township Hall and leaving a message.Water and sewer service are available in certain areas for homeowners connected to the Township lines. Call the Township offices for more information. Voter Information may be obtained at the Township offices. Zoning Compliance Permits for new construction and alterations to existing structures are available at the Township Hall. Building permits for new construction or alterations can not be issued until an application has been filed with, and approved by, the Zoning Administrator. Forms for these permits are available from a folder on the bulletin board in the Township Hall. A copy of the Zoning Ordinance for the Township also is available for a slight fee. New landowners are advised to carefully study Part III, IV, and VII of the Zoning Ordinance book. These sections deal with regulations on Height, Placement and Floor Space; Waterfront Setback; Green Belt Requirements, and Non-Conforming Uses and Structures, Zoning enforcement procedures have been tightened recently. Some or all of the following permits may be needed before building or altering a structure in the Township or for doing any work in or adjacent to a body of water: Zoning permitBuilding permit (see Building permit below) Soil Erosion permit (see Soil Erosion below) Health Department permit for septic tank (see Septic Tank permit below) Department of Environmental Quality Permit (for any work in the waters of the state including wetlands and for certain kinds of boat docks. (see below) Township Administration: The Township is governed by an elected board of officials: Supervisor, Treasurer, Clerk and two Trustees. The Board is responsible for the general administration of the Township and regularly meets at 4 p.m. the second Tuesday of every month is the Township Hall. Other Township boards include: The Township Board of Review consists of three members and is available to hear appeals regarding property taxes. They may be contacted through the Assessor’s office. The Zoning Board of Appeals which consists of three members appointed by the Township Board. The Appeals Board and the Zoning Administrator are charged with acting upon all questions as they arise in the administration of the zoning ordinance, including the interpretation of zoning maps. The Zoning Administrator can answer most questions. The Board hears and decided all matters referred to it or upon which it is required to pass pursuant to the current Zoning Ordinance. The Zoning Board of Appeals meets at the Township Hall, depending upon the need for its services. Notices of its meetings are regularly published in the Crystal View newspaper. The Planning/Zoning Board deals with issues related to rezoning, is responsible for planning the residential/commercial/industrial growth of the community, and develops and updates the existing zoning ordinances. The Board meets at 6:30 p.m. the first Thursday of every month in the Township Hall. All Township board meetings are open to the public, and Public Notices regarding the Township are regularly published in the Crystal View newspaper (Crystal Falls).
